Kimu Taku Rice キムタクご飯

Kimu Taku Rice is a popular school dish that is very much loved by elementary school kids.  In Japan, all public elementary and junior high schools provide school lunch, so we often talk about the school lunch menus even long after graduating from school.  Kimu Taku Rice started in Nagano prefecture, which is in the central part of Japan.   Now it is served nationwide because it became so popular among kids.  Its name "Kimu" is from "kimchi" and "Taku" is from "Takuwan", traditional Japanese preserved radish.  Japanese people always associate the name Kimutaku with a famous (and very handsome) actor, Kimura Takuya, whose nickname is Kimutaku.  So, this school lunch dish sounds a little funny and confusing.

It's very easy to cook; try this recipe!  If Takuwan is hard to get in your country, then skip it and you can call it "Kimu Rice".

Ingredients (serves 4)

120g sliced Pork belly (1/4lb)

200g kimchi (1cup)

180g Tsubozuke Takuwan (preserved radish) (1cup)

4 cups hot cooked rice

soy source

Procedure
1. Cut sliced pork into small pieces.  Stir fry it on a preheated pan.
2. Add Kimchi and Takuwan in it and fry a little.
3. Mix it in rice and check the taste.  If not salty enough, season it with some soy source.

Kimu Taku Rice: my daughter asked me to make this popular school lunch dish. “Kimu” means kimchi and “Taku” means Takuwan, dried-and-pickled radish. School lunch is basically served in all public elementary and junior high schools in Japan. Kimu Taku Rice started in Nagano prefecture and now it’s popular nationwide. The word “Kimu Taku” usually refers to a famous actor, so this name sounds very funny to Japanese people. . It’s easy to make it: stir fry sliced pork belly, kimchi, and Takuwan. Put it into hot rice, add some soy source, and mix. That’s all. Simple and Tasty! Takuwan is not available in your country? Then you can make simply “Kimu Rice”!!! . . .
