Kimu Taku Rice is a popular school dish that is very much loved by elementary school kids. In Japan, all public elementary and junior high schools provide school lunch, so we often talk about the school lunch menus even long after graduating from school. Kimu Taku Rice started in Nagano prefecture, which is in the central part of Japan. Now it is served nationwide because it became so popular among kids. Its name "Kimu" is from "kimchi" and "Taku" is from "Takuwan", traditional Japanese preserved radish. Japanese people always associate the name Kimutaku with a famous (and very handsome) actor, Kimura Takuya, whose nickname is Kimutaku. So, this school lunch dish sounds a little funny and confusing.
It's very easy to cook; try this recipe! If Takuwan is hard to get in your country, then skip it and you can call it "Kimu Rice".
